SEO vs GEO: what changes for sales teams?
SEO and GEO overlap, but the sales conversation is not identical. SEO traditionally focuses on improving discovery through search engines and organic results. GEO/AEO expands the visibility question to AI-generated answers, citations and how brands are represented in conversational search.
What stays the same
Both rely on strong information architecture, useful content, authority, relevance and a clear understanding of what buyers search for. That means SEO experience remains highly relevant to AEO and GEO.
What changes
- The surface: buyers may discover brands inside generated answers rather than only a list of links.
- The evidence: visibility can involve mentions, citations, entities and the sources AI systems use.
- The buyer conversation: teams may ask not only “Do we rank?” but also “Are we being surfaced and represented correctly in AI answers?”
- The ownership: the work can cross SEO, content, digital, growth and product marketing.
What this means for prospecting
Do not pitch GEO as “SEO but for ChatGPT.” Instead, connect the conversation to a problem the prospect already understands: organic visibility, content performance, category discovery, competitive research or changes in how buyers evaluate vendors.
Three useful discovery questions
- How are you currently measuring visibility in AI-generated answers?
- Which team owns the content and search signals that influence that visibility?
- Have you seen AI search change how prospects discover or compare your company?
The opportunity for AEO sellers
The strongest sales motion is not to convince every company that AEO exists. It is to identify accounts where the underlying business problem already exists and use AI search as the new lens through which to discuss it.
